NETA Weighs in on Grounding System Testing

By Conduit

The Spring issue of NETA World contains an interesting article on testing grounding systems written by regular contributor, Jeff Jowett, a Senior Applications Engineer for Megger. Jowett explains why, “for large and complex grounding systems,” SmartGround® Multimeter (SGM) in the hands of a qualified grounding specialist “affords incontestable results.”

Your Data Center’s Hidden (and Shocking) Potential

By Conduit

As data center facilities increase in size, complexity, and energy consumption, new data center projects often require dedicated substations. When that is the case, the data center becomes an extension of the substation and is subject to its same inherent risks.

Regardless of who owns the substation, the risks to personnel and property remain the same – damaging or potentially lethal voltages caused by line-to-ground faults and lightning strikes. Read more…

Green Eggs and Blam!

By Conduit

Prior to the 2018 version, NFPA 70E simply cautioned that “greater emphasis may be necessary with respect to de-energizing” equipment with incident energy (IE) exceeding 40 cal/cm2, “when exposed to electrical hazards.” This nebulous direction was applied within the industry by simply labeling everything over 40 cals as “Dangerous – No PPE Exists.” In its new 2018 version, NFPA 70E eliminated this cautionary language. This may lead some to infer that working on energized equipment…

Playing Zone (Interlock) Defense? Consider This in Your Game Plan

By Conduit

While ZSI may be an effective way to mitigate risks of injury and damage to electrical equipment in the event of a fault, it must be specified, applied, and installed properly – and thoroughly commissioned. All circuit breakers within the protected zone must be equipped with ZSI capability. ZSI installation depends on proper interconnect wiring between circuit breakers, and often, different switchgear lineups…

A Cookie Cutter Approach Can Cost You Dough

By Conduit, uPDate

How often is your standardized approach resulting in an over-designed ground grid? Stop wasting your dough by blindly erring on the side of caution simply because you don’t know what lies beneath. While standardizing a ground grid design seems like it would save time and money, this approach fails to consider a site’s soil composition and resistivity. Soil resistivity is affected by variables such as layer composition, moisture, molecular structure, salt content, other chemicals, etc. Making assumptions based merely on a site’s location, visible soil observations, or soil borings is not enough to determine its apparent resistivity. All variables, especially those affecting life-safety, must be incorporated to allow for site-specific considerations…

A Man, A Ferret, and a Two-Dollar Fix

By Conduit

Last week, I watched a BMS contractor trying to communicate with a Variable Frequency Drive (VFD), but as soon as he tried to control the VFD’s speed, the connection was dropped. Although both the BMS contractor and the VFD contractor tried for a couple of weeks to resolve the issue with their respective tech support groups, nothing they suggested worked…
